Best Fightpads 2020 – The best fighting game controllers

Madcatz Fightpad

Although I’m firmly a fightstick player. There are just certain fighting games that are more suited to playing on a controller. These include games like Mortal Kombat and Smash Bros.

In addition, fightpads are generally cheaper than fightsticks. Therefore, it’s great if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a fightstick and still want to benefit from a controller designed for fighting games.

What is the difference between a standard controller and a fightpad?

Fightpads are essentially designed to play fighting games. Not all are the same but, generally, a fightpad will have the main function buttons on the face of the pad. What you get is, essentially, a six-button arcade-style layout. This is useful for games like street fighter, that have a six-button system.

The D-pad is also different on a fight pad; It may be larger and more responsive. This helps greatly when executing certain moves.

Fightpads will generally be wired to provide better response times and hence be more accurate than a standard wireless controller.

I also find that fightpads are more comfortable than standard controllers, especially for longer gaming sessions. This is due to their more ergonomic design.

MadCatz were once famous for making quality arcade-style fightsticks that are, to some extent, still around today. Although their fightpads are less known, they’re still worth getting if you want a decent controller designed for fighting games.

You pretty much get everything you need in a fightpad but with the added bonus of an analog stick. So, if the d-pad is not to your liking you can use the analog stick and still take advantage of the 6 button arcade layout.

Fighting games on the standard Nintendo switch controller can be a little awkward due to its size. Thankfully, PowerA have made the Fusion Fightpad to make things easier and more comfortable.

The satisfying d-pad and responsive six-button layout means you will have the advantage when it comes to playing games like Smash bros.

Because the controller is officially licensed by Nintendo you know it’s high quality and will likely last a long time.

Looking for a little bit of nostalgia? Then check this Gamecube style controller out for the Nintendo Switch. If you’re an old school smash player then this is pretty much the controller to go for when playing smash ultimate. It can also, of course, work just as well with other games as well.

It should be noted, however, that some users have reported cases of random input, so be wary of this before purchasing this controller.

Razer Raion Fightpad

Platform: PS4, PC

Razer are known for their premium gaming products and fightsticks, like the Razer Panthera. The Razer Raion is no exception. It’s probably the most expensive and premium fightpad on this list.

Is it worth the price? If you’re looking for a premium fightpad, then I would definitely say so. It has high-quality parts and users have reported the fightpad to be incredibly high quality and responsive.

If you’re in the middle of choosing between a fightpad and a fightstick, however. Then I would probably pay a little bit more and go for a quality arcade stick.
